Josephine Trinidad McMahon

Josephine is a 12th generation San Antonian and representational mixedmedia artist. Raised in humble circumstances in the shadow of Mission San José, she discovered that art could become both a refuge and a voice. The mission's enduring architecture, sacred traditions, and lessons of perseverance shaped her earliest understanding of beauty, family, and community This insight taught her to see value where others might overlook it—a perspective that continues to define her work today.

As a self-taught artist, she has spent decades developing a body of work that bridges realism and imagination. Her paintings celebrate the cultural richness of the American Southwest, Texas and Northern Mexico while exploring themes of identity, memory, resilience, and renewal. Whether portraying the elegance of wildlife, the quiet strength of working animals, vibrant Mexican traditions, or luminous desert flora, each painting is rooted in a respect for heritage and the enduring spirit of ordinary people.

The influence of Spanish Texas appears throughout her work—not only in architectural forms and Spanish Colonial ornamentation, but also in a belief that craftsmanship is an act of devotion. Her paintings reflect the contrast between hardship and hope: brilliant color emerging from darkness, delicate flowers thriving in harsh landscapes, and powerful animals standing as symbols of endurance.

Working primarily in more than one medium, she combines meticulous realism with bold contemporary color and expressive composition. Her collections range from intimate portraits of hummingbirds and wildlife to dramatic Longhorns, Day of the Dead imagery, architectural studies, and joyful celebrations of Mexican fiestas. Though diverse in subject matter, each painting shares a common thread: honoring resilience, celebrating culture, and finding extraordinary beauty in everyday life.

Today, her goal is to create artwork that invites viewers to pause, remember their own stories, and recognize the dignity found in perseverance. Every painting is a tribute to where she began—a young girl inspired by the timeless teachings and quiet strength surrounding traditions, heritage—and to the belief that creativity can transform even the most modest of subjects into something enduring.

Josephine received a BS from SDSU in Computer Technologies and trained at Sedona School of Fine Arts. She is dedicated to mentoring AP Art Students through CAST Schools. She has been a Resident Artist at the Hotel Contessa for several years, is a member of “Oil Painters of America“and serves as Vice President -Competition Chair of “River Art Group”, a historic and one of the largest Art Co-Operatives in Texas. She is represented by River Art Gallery, Hotel Contessa, and San Antonio Art League and Museum.
